Chang Cheh directs this above average action thriller, whilst Wang Chung gets to play the lead role of Huang Guodong - a model officer torn between avenging the death of his friend Liang Guan (Fu Sheng) and upholding the law and maintaining the reputation of the Police Force. Lily Li is Shen Yan, Fu Sheng's girlfriend who helps Guodong in the investigation but purely so that she can eventually get to see the murderer suffer the same grisly fate as her boyfriend did.
After 5 years the killer is finally traced to a money counterfeiter called Mr. Sun (played by Wang Hsieh) and a showdown takes place on Sun's private yacht.
This police thriller is very similar in content and theme to the Italian crime thrillers that were starting to emerge around the same time e.g Innocent people forced to rebel and take action against the rise of criminal activity. Chang Cheh lets the story unfold at quite a leisurely pace with no real tension in the first two thirds of the film. It does pick up however during the final section of the film with a very exciting finale where Wang Chung storms Wang Hsieh's private yacht single handedly in pure Chang Cheh style!
The martial arts action is restricted to Fu Sheng's scenes at the beginning of the film and the odd brawl here and there - though the style of the fights are more rough and 'street based' like in 'Big Brother Cheng'.
Wang Chung does a pretty good job in the lead, Lily Li is great and displays a nice variety of emotions throughout the film, Fong Hak On even pops up as Wang Chung's partner but a special mention has to go to Wang Hsieh as Mr. Sun for a priceless scene where his yacht is being stormed by the police with his men being picked off one by one, but instead of fleeing, he is seen calmly having a cigarette and sipping on some brandy below deck at his private bar. A nice touch.
To sum up - recommended to those who enjoy seeing martial arts in a modern day setting and whilst the film benefits from it's action packed ending some may be put off by the slowish middle section and gunplay that replaces fists.
