Yes ladies and gentlemen..............I am sure you have seen or heard of a panorama of movies that carried the title angel /angels , and I am sure some of them may provide some glimpse ,if any at all , of what action in it's purest form is all about. Well make no mistake ; here's an authentic exhibition of what a mix of old school kung fu and contemporary action is all about.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves by classifying this as new wave ,ol' skool or any such classes ; This is a movie with a satisfying blend of different elements designed to entertain any audience.
The players -----
Some of the most impressive names from the SHAW stable, and indie studios alike.
LIU CHUN KU (director)-----Also directed the following , Lady assassin; Bastard Swordman 1 & 2; Three evil masters.
GORDON LIU (leading man)-----fist of the white lotus ;Challenge of the masters; Dirty ho .
LIANG JAN REN (baddie)-------Secret service of the imperial court;the victim; fearless dragons.
MOON LEE (leading lady)----devil hunters; beauty investigator; Bury me high.
TSUI FAT (action choreographer) -----Also choregraph the fighting for ,Fighting fool ; lover's blade ;cheetah on fire;crystal hunt.
MOON LEE is a special agent operating undercover for an organized crime task force ,chaired by LIU CHUN KU himself. She is seeking proof of slave trafficking against baddie LIANG JAN REN , who happens to be the syndicate's headman. GORDON LIU is LIANG JAN REN'S personal bodyguard , body he is taken hostage by the natural and feminine charms of MOON LEE . The story is a unique inter-mix of love , loyalty, betrayal and compromise , with a common denominator --action !!
Blistering hand to hand fight scenes aided by TSUI FAT'S trademark quick -cut editing .Weapons include guns, knives and staffs used with flourish and flair . MOON LEE is in fantastic form as she powers her way to a showdown with (baddie) LIANG JAN REN himself. Her moves are fluid yet powerful, suave yet lethal ;and her un-yielding sex appeal knows no bounds . Even GORDON LIU fell under the spell of her intoxicating beauty and----- like the author of this review--- poor ol' gordon liu, " just couldn't bring himself to killing her ," when ordered to do so.
LIU CHUN KU'S direction is solid as usual ,it's nice to see him working without SHAWS big budget yet still winning over audiences.
TSUI FAT is cunning with his choreohraphy , realising he is not working with just the playes natural kung fu skills , he manipulates set pieces well ,car-chases ,tunnels and parking structures to give a full range of the players skill versatility and adaptability . A virtual testimony to one of the most under-rated , but remarkable , choreographers the genre has ever produced. For those unfamiliar with TSUI FAT; he was the villian with the pointed dual section staff that 'jackie chan' fought at the end of the classic flick 'dragon fist'.
This author's infatuation with MOON LEE'S inebriating beauty , makes it hard to find fault with her work; however, infatuation aside ;----This film is an adrenalin filled action spectacle with a lil' something for all.
This is not new wave nor old school , this is ACTION with the acting and martial arts to go with it ; this is KILLER ANGELS !!
