For all Ivy Ling Po fans, like me this is her masterpiece, excelent movie a story with a difference about a clan of women who sleep in coffins. However they have special powers to turn men into zombies by using needles. One of them becomes a renagade and our Ivy is sent to sort her out.
Great little Shaw Brothers Horror/Fantasy/Swordplay starring Ivy Ling Po who sets out to put an end to her evil sister who is using the Fingers Of Doom to disrupt the Boxer World.
The plot that runs alongside this involves two brothers in the not-very-profitable umbrella making business, who set out to try and find their brother who mysteriously disappeared after a meeting with crafty Master Chang (who happens to be in cahoots with Ivy Lin Po's evil sister).
The main gimmick in the film are the Fingers Of Doom themselves. These are long gold metal fingernails worn by the sisters which fire poisonous mind-controlling pins into the back of the victims necks. Once under the Finger Of Dooms spell, the unfortunate male victims turn into fearless Zombies who must obey their Mistresses every order!.
Being a fan of these sorts of Fantasy films there is plenty for me to admire here. The Fingers Of Doom look great on the two female leads - Ivy Ling Po is particularly effective as the beautiful femme fatale. The deadly pins fired into the back of necks provides a frequent gruesome touch to the mildly creepy proceedings. And the mist covered, decaying sets are all suitably atmospheric.
Not a film for non stop martial arts action fans, there is a long, talky middle stretch - the action when it is on screen is all swordplay with a little bit of wirework, it's all pretty competent but nothing amazing.
Strongly recommended for Kung Fu Horror fans like myself, though straight up Kung Fu fans are probably advised to give it a miss.
(Incidently the Fingers Of Doom nails were worn by RZA on the front cover on the Gravediggaz 2nd LP - surely a nod to this Shaw Bros production?)
