HONG KONG/ASIAN CINEMA. THESE PEOPLE MADE IT POSSIBLE TODAY FOR ALL THE COLLECTORS
IN THE WORLD TO EXPERIENCE AND ENJOY THE MOST EXCITING GENRE OF HONG KONG/CINEMA
FOR THE LAST 2 DECADES.
FIRST
ON OUR LIST IS:-
TOBY (OUR
MAN IN CAMDEN LONDON UK)
Had it not been for this mans dedication and overwhelming effort in obtaining
lost titles that are either destroyed, overlooked as being insignificant or
even sometimes disregarded. The collectors market of RARE Hong Kong/Asian
would not have existed today. FLASHLEGS want to pay tribute and over all recognition
Toby for all his contribution to Hong Kong Asian RARE movies that exist today
in our entire collections world wide.
FLASHLEGS obtained most of its RARE Hong Kong /Asian movies through this formidable
and amazing man Toby. It’s fair to say that after knowing Toby for 8
years he has never been the type of character that relishes lime light and
fame. Therefore due to this fact we have not disclosed his surname. But many
collectors will know him and appreciate his unprecedented efforts to Hong
Kong/ Asian over the past 2 decades. Toby is to Hong Kong Cinema the RARE
Genre Indiana Jones who manages to find rare and delighted titles as though
they were relics and indeed they are, to most of us in the collectors market
today. TOBY has a passion for HONG KONG cinema which started from a young
boy, and that same passion, helped nearly all collectors in the world to be
able to, not just view but to posses, ONCE RARE FOR MANY years SNAKE DEADLY
ACT. For all of us who are collectors of RARE Hong Kong /Asian Cinema if you
had not known the important of this man, Let it be known FLASH LEGS told you
first.
TOBY RUN’S
A SMALL STALL IN CAMDEN MARKET EVERY SATURDAY SELLING JUST RARE’S AT
$5.00 each ALL YOU BRITS OUT THERE SUPPORT THIS MAN.
SECOND
ON OUR LIST IS: - RICK BAKER
RICK BAKER
the man who pioneered THE GREAT ‘EASTERN HEROES’ It almost virtually
impossible for any real collector to say they’ve never heard of EASTERN
HEROES they are the fist BRITISH company to release the most dynamic and all
time GREAT Classic’s such as THE VICTIM, SNAKE IN THE MONKEY SHADDOW,
SNAKE DEADLY ACT, TWO ON THE ROAD, and many more. Despite some bad publicity
about the man he also has a passion for HONG KONG /ASIANCINEMA. He was the
first man in the UK to spearhead HONGKONG/ASIAN CINAMA in a big way in the
UK after it had stagnated into a hand full of small time collectors in the
late 80’s early 90’s. During the LATE NIGHT CINEMA era of the
70’s 80’s Hong Kong Cinema thrived mainly through the Afro/Caribbean
communities. Rick Baker with the help of his partner Toby resurrected the
spirit of HONG KONG/ASIAN CINEMA from the dead.
All the
major companies in the UK are spin offs from RICK BAKER’s EASTERN HEROES
and most of them have no real idea, what they are actually doing. RICK BAKER
however had all the great ideas but unfortunately was under financed to put
them into main stream. RICK introduced big stars such as JET LEE, DONNY YEN
to the UK in the late 90’s before they both reach the US mainstream
cinema. WE AT FLASHLEG PAY TRIBUTE AND RECOGNITION TO THIS MAN AND HIS UNPRESEDENTED
EFFORTS TO KEEP HONG KONG/ASIAN CINEMA ALIVE AND KICKING TODAY.
THIRD
PERSON ON OUR LIST:- DAVE SINCLAIR
This man
is an unknown in the collectors market but well known to the early UK pioneers.
It was DAVE SINCLAIR who gave FLASH LEGS the idea to design CLASSICAL sleeves
that have set the pace in the RARE HONG KONG/ ASIAN movie market today. Dave
had posses about 2000 lobby cards and stills of the RAREST HONG KONG/ ASIAN
cinema during his 6/7 years working in the LATE NITE HONG KONG cinema in the
early 70’s. I remember working as a bouncer in the cinema’s during
the early 70’s at the early age of 18. When I had left DAVE SINCLAIR
stayed on and collected all the POSTERS and stills that were being given away
after the movies were shown. Dave gave us access to all his stills, pictures
and posters to enable us to create designer sleeves/posters which have now
become collector’s items worldwide.
DAVE SINCLAIR is a walking library for HONG KONG/Asian cinema. Name the movie
he will tell you the year the stars and the storyline. He is a close associate
of Toby, Rick and my self Flashlegs Pete Senior we all had to utilising him
as a library of knowledge over the years.
We at
FLASH LEGS want to thank Dave for his great contribution to Hong Kong ASIAN
CINEMA. And a special thanks from us.
FORTH
IS NOT A PERSON BUT AN ORGANISATION HONG KONG MOVIE DATA BASE.
We have
no idea who these people are, however we must salute the organisation for
the excellence, perseverance, dynamic research, and overwhelming dedication
to HONG KONG Cinema.
Of all
the companies and individuals we spoke of these guys who ever they are should
be given an award for excellence for their time effort and magnificent work.
Flashlegs
took a lot of information from these guys and we cannot begin to express how
grateful, every collector should be to have these guys around.
We have
about 200 titles they do not they don’t seem to have in there database
as yet however they have mention over 100 titles which we do not have.
GREAT
WORK GUYS KEEP IT UP FROM FLASHLEGS.

THE
FIFTH PERSON (SHAWMAN) Andy?
ANDY a
great fan and collector of SHAW BROTHERS FILMS and of course RARE KUNG FU.
This man’s great contribution to HONG KONG Cinema by giving us a touch
of the golden memory of CLASSIC POSTERS.
He was
never given credit for his work in collecting original posters and restoring
them back to their natural state. The fact we are graphic designers makes
if clear to us that one has to posse’s real passion for HONG KONG/ ASIAN
to be able to do this kind of work.
He’s
a family man who works in a full time job, therefore we believe this man should
be given full credit for his excellent contribution. And those of you who
bought his posters let it be known they are now collector’s items.
THE
LAST INDIVIDUAL IS KNOWN TO MOST AS MANTIS 2K
I remember
when Giles (Mantis 2k) came to our shop some years ago. Very sharp intelligent
young man. He was age 16 at the time and wanted very much to be a collector.
Now this
young man is an Icon to be very much respected in the RARE KUNG FU market.
All the young collectors should rally around this young man because of his
passion for HONGKONG CINEMA and his knowledge accumulated in such a short
space of time. He is a young genius in the making and deserves the respect
he been given world wide.
I remember
he came to my shop years ago with a RARE movie called ANGRY RIVER with English
subtitles, no one I knew at the time had an English subtitles print of this
movie. I was quite shocked at the time because he wanted to trade it for Gloomy
Tower aka Meteor Monk. That’s when I it became apparent to me this young
was a up and coming genius, simply because we were the only outlet who had
GLOOMY TOWER in English not even the great Toby had it, but Giles knew it
was a RARE and he knew he had a RARE to trade for if. Keep up the good work
Giles.
Giles runs a site called rarekungfumovies.com and even today he has many RARES
we do not have in our library. So we suggest all you Brits and Collectors
worldwide continue to support him he’s the youngest and greatest icon
in the RARE KUNG FU Market.
FINAL
COMMENTS
Had it
not been for these individuals’ mentioned above and their hard work
and dedication many movies would have been history. Unfortunately Hong Kong
ASIAN Cinema back in the classical days was hardly given any credit at all
by their makers. Nor did they seem to expect much. We in the west however
acquired great appreciation and passion over the past 30/40 years of HONG
KONG/ASIAN cinema. Most of their movies are either lost destroyed or disregarded.
The new are of HONG KONG/ ASIAN has finally made its mark, having said this,
we can only speak for the Andy Lau and Chow Yun Fat Genre and thanks to Celestial
we have the Shaw Brothers Studios releases.
The HONG KONG/ASIAN superstars of today have finally made an impact and as
Hollywood seems to be running out of ideas for entertainment by way of numerous
remakes from the 30’s 50’s era, people today are yarning for action
movies with GUNSHED, BLOODYFISTS and TRADITIONAL MAYHEM. The entertainment
market is an extremely large market place. Mind you its taken a long time
for the big boys to recognise this but the small collectors who have emerged
are now suffering with classic movie being cut in ridiculous sections of the
movie, for what reasons no one knows. FLASH LEGS IS AROUND TO GIVE BACK THOSE
CAPTIONS STOLEN FROM YOU WHEN EVER POSSIBLE.
